Dissection Discoveries A fantastic dissection workshop for primary students developed in conjunction with our friends from Dissection Connection. Enquire Now Hands-on Biology School Workshop Your students will explore the major body parts, how body systems are arranged and experience just what is like to work in a biological laboratory. Our presenter will guide your students through their dissections, pointing out relevant features of the specimen and ensuring safety throughout. We only use high-quality specimens sourced from ethical suppliers, each prepared by Dissection Connection to laboratory standards. Fantastic as a stand-alone workshop or paired with our popular human body science incursion. Trustpilot Online Class Version We’ve run live interactive distance programs since 2010 and are highly experienced in making online classes engaging for students on a variety of web conferencing platforms. All of the same curriculum points will be covered, but the activities may vary from those listed for face-to-face incursions. Our online classes include demonstrations, Q&A, and hands-on activities (you will receive a materials list upon booking). Full child protections are in place We usually connect to classes & homes via Zoom, however if you wish to use a different software we can work with you on getting the connection live. If you connect with us via Zoom Full system requirements for Zoom here Each student should test their Zoom connection here. Once the date & time is arranged we will send you simple connection instructions (one click & you’re in!) The activities were appropriate for the levels of students and showed that science is fun Dissection Workshop Details This engaging workshop offers primary students a chance to be introduced to biology in a fun and safe atmosphere. Many schools use this to complement a human body unit of work. On the day of the school visit, Fizzics will supply relevant PPE and equipment for the workshop. If you wish the dissection to be performed by the Fizzics presenter only this also can be arranged. A large variety of specimens can be used and are subject to availability. Prices vary per specimen (see costs below) All are prepared ethically: Whole Specimens Piglet Cane Toad Crayfish (male & female pair) Prepared specimens Cow: eye, heart, knee joint, femur, hoof and lower limb. Pig: half head (lateral section) and pluck (lungs, trachea, heart, oesophagus, liver) All specimens are sent frozen from Dissection Connection to Fizzics Education prior to our visit. This takes time to arrange so please let us know in advance which specimens you would like the students to work with! This incursion can also be viewed as a LIVE web conference anywhere in the world! Question – How are the whole animals euthanised? The toads have been euthanised via CO2 asphyxiation in accordance with the latest method endorsed by Biosecurity Queensland. The piglet stillborns are collected from pig farms on the day of birth and frozen. There is no inducement to euthanise piglets to sell as specimens; a surviving piglet is worth much more to farmers as a product. Piglet stillborns that would normally be treated as waste can now help educate students in the classroom. Please inform your attending families prior to the visit that the specimens are prepared ethically by Dissection Connection. Requirements Appropriate for years 3 to 6 with a maximum of 30 students per class Students should have long hair tied back and wear closed-toe shoes Chairs are not required Access to at least 5 large tables, rooms with vinyl, wood or tiled floors are best Students will work in groups of 2 or more, dependent on the number of specimens ordered Duration 60 or 90 minutes, set up time 30 minutes and pack up time 30 minutes For safety students will not be given sharp bladed instruments. A thorough cleanup will be done by our presenter after the workshop.
