Follow FizzicsEd 150 Science Experiments:

You will need:

  • Warm water with starch added
  • Waste paper from old notebooks, newspapers and magazines
  • Bucket or an old basin
  • Mortar and Pestle, or any other device to crush the paper
  • Wire mesh sieve

Recycle paper science experiment - materials needed
1 Recycle paper science experiment - tearing newspaper into small pieces

Tear the paper into small pieces.

2 Recycle paper science experiment - adding starch to newspaper mix

Soak the paper in the warm starch solution for 3-4 hours.

3 Recycle paper science experiment - using mortar and pestle on newspaper mix

Take the paper out of the water and pound it with the mortar and pestle until it is pulpy.

Add more starch to the paper thicken the mix, stir thoroughly.

4 Recycle paper science experiment - scraping newspaper mix onto wire mesh

Place the pulp in the sieve and press gently to remove the water.

5 Recycle paper science experiment - smoothing out newspaper mix on wire gauze

Turn the sieve upside down onto a smooth surface and flatten the pulp and thin as possible.

6 Recycle paper science experiment - finished paper

The paper will be ready to use once dry.
