Slime, Sherbet & Bubbles

Slime, Sherbet & Bubbles

Outdoor chemistry workshop where students can see variable testing first hand

Fun science for active Kindergarten to Year 2 students!

We explore everyday chemistry in a different way;

  • Create gigantic bubbles…just what is the science behind them?
  • Make tasty sherbet… a chemical reaction in your mouth!
  • Launch a rocket… which variable changes the height?
  • Make some gross slime. Cool chemical science!

This school science visit is a great way to explore mixtures and simple variables in an outdoor environment.

Online Class Version

We’ve run live interactive distance programs since 2010 and are highly experienced in making online classes engaging for students on a variety of web conferencing platforms.

  • All of the same curriculum points will be covered, but the activities may vary from those listed for face-to-face incursions.
  • Our online classes include demonstrations, Q&A, and hands-on activities (you will receive a materials list upon booking).
  • Full child protections are in place
  • We usually connect to classes & homes via Zoom, however if you wish to use a different software we can work with you on getting the connection live.

Australian ACARA Content Outcomes:
Science

Objects are made of materials that have observable properties (ACSSU003).

Different materials can be combined, including by mixing, for a particular purpose (ACSSU031).

NSW Science & Technology Syllabus Content
A student:

STe-4MW-ST
identifies that objects are made of materials that have observable properties

ST1-6MW-S
identifies that materials can be changed or combined

ST1-7MW-T
describes how the properties of materials determine their use

STE-SCI-01
identifies and describes characteristics of living things, properties of materials, and movement

STE-PQU-01
poses questions based on observations to collect data

ST1-SCI-01
measures and describes changes in living things, materials, movement, Earth and the sky

ST1-PQU-01
poses questions based on observations and information to investigate cause and effect

Victorian F – 10 Science Curriculum

Objects are made of materials that have observable properties (VCSSU044)

Everyday materials can be physically changed or combined with other materials in a variety of ways for particular purposes (VCSSU045)

Respond to and pose questions, and make predictions about familiar objects and events (VCSIS050)

Participate in guided investigations, including making observations using the senses, to explore and answer questions (VCSIS051)

Natural and processed materials have a range of physical properties; these properties can influence their use (VCSSU060)

With guidance, identify questions in familiar contexts that can be investigated scientifically and predict what might happen based on prior knowledge (VCSIS065)

Solids, liquids and gases behave in different ways and have observable properties that help to classify them (VCSSU076)

Glenquarry Public School

What a great day! The children were buzzing with enthusiasm. They had all had things to go home and try. I liked the freedom to create that the kids had as well as the support & help supplied. The activities were varied and fun and we had access to 'expensive' stuff that schools don't have.  Better than expected!

Workshop Content

The workshop is built around 3 modules:

  1. Chemistry of giant bubbles – Students investigate the effects of changing the bubble mixture.
  2. Sherbet making – Students witness that certain ingredients can be combined to create a reaction.
  3. Slime making – Students learn to follow a procedure and problem-solve to get the desired result.

Fair testing of variables and clearly communicating results is emphasised throughout each module.
There’s also time for a rocket launch to really demonstrate that variables can have a big influence on the result.

This workshop is best run outdoors on a grassed area near a table. Otherwise, an undercover area out of the rain will suffice.
