Podcast: SciScouts with Kate Lehane Follow Us: Comments 0 SciScouts with Kate Lehane About Discover the impact that SciScouts is having on kids across the ACT and beyond! We chat with Kate Lehane, the Branch Commissioner – STEM & Innovation for the Scouts Australia (ACT Branch) where she leads the SciScouts program encouraging Scouts and Guides to learn more about STEM-related activities and careers. Hosted by Ben Newsome from Fizzics Education More Information About the FizzicsEd Podcast About SciScouts ACT SciScouts is Scouts ACT’s STEM and Innovation program established in 2015 to offer exciting STEM opportunities for our youth members. The SciScouts program builds partnerships with local universities and other specialist providers to connect our youth members with passionate experts. Evidence has shown that hands-on activities are one of the most effective ways to get youth engaged and interested in STEM. The strength of Scouting is the hands-on practical programs that they deliver according to the “Learning by Doing” ethos of the Scouting organisation, within a Plan > Do > Review methodology. SciScouts is nurturing an already naturally inquisitive audience of young people; SciScouts just provides the opportunities to build excitement, influence career aspirations, and aim to foster pure and simple inspiration in science discovery and innovation. Scouts Australia has recently introduced a new Award Scheme which includes STEM & Innovation, as one of six new Special Interest Areas (SIAs). SIAs encourage Scouts to try new things and to progress through their existing interests. Scouts will be involved in the cycle of Plan > Do > Review > for a project or activity related to one of the Special Interest Areas. This involves the Scout setting personal goals with support from others. By injecting broader STEM into existing programs SciScouts support Leaders to further enhance the experience of the youth members. This also strengthens the skills of our youth members and Leaders and provides them with confidence to lead similar activities. This is achieved by participation activities, events and workshops. We will also deliver resource materials to support Leaders in maintaining the momentum and interest that is generated.
