How do I connect?

After you book in you will receive a registration link. After you register you will receive a unique joining link. You will also get email reminders before the session as well as links you can use to test your connection.

What equipment do I need? Can I test my connection to Zoom?

You just need a computer or device connected to Zoom. You can see the full system requirements here.

• Download the Zoom app to your device. You can also join via the browser but you will not be able to participate in polls, which will make the session less interactive.
• Test your connection in the Zoom testing room

Can my kids hear & see everyone? What about child protection?

Your kids will be able to see and hear our presenters.

During online public events

• For child protection guests are unable to connect using audio or video or share their screens.
• Chat is disabled so audience members cannot talk to each other privately (this is for child safety).

There are three ways in which we build child-safe interactivity

1. Text-based Q&A – Our moderators can either relay these questions to the presenter to answer live, or can type answers directly. The Q&A is public, not private, and only becomes visible to the audience once answers have been provided (meaning that inappropriate questions can simply be dismissed by our moderators).
2. Multiple-choice polls whose answers can be published to the audience
3. At-home activities

We have the ability to kick anyone off the call who is behaving inappropriately, after an initial warning.

During private events (schools)

• We are able to mute the audio and turn off the video of all students.
• Students are unable to share their screens.
• Chat is disabled so audience members cannot use text-based chat to talk to each other privately (this is for child safety).
• The students will be very excited! We’ll do a round-robin of introductions and then we will ‘spotlight’ our video for most of the presentation for classroom management.
• We will toggle the views between the entire group of students and just us as needed.

We also have polling where we can interact with the students (they answer questions and we see everyone’s answers). Teachers can receive this data on request. Should the teacher be comfortable that only students are in the room, teachers can turn on and off students audio and video if needed.

During private events (parties)

• The booking parent/guardian is provided with a private joining link that they are responsible for forwarding onto the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the participating children.
• The kids will be very excited! We’ll do a round-robin of introductions and then we will ‘spotlight’ our video for most of the presentation to keep kids focused on the experiments.
• Parent(s)/guardian(s) are welcome to sit next to their child(ren) and observe the party.
• Students will not be able to use text-based chat to talk to each other (this is for child safety).

I’m worried about Zoom, I’ve heard bad things…

We are very serious about child safety and wellbeing. We would not be using Zoom if we didn’t believe that it allows us to maintain our Online Child Protection Policy. You can also read about how we control Zoom properly with child protection in mind.

Is it interactive? Do the kids get to do anything?

We have several different ways we incorporate child-safe interactivity. These vary depending on the format.

1. Text-based Q&A – Our moderators can either relay these questions to the presenter to answer live, or can type answers directly. The Q&A is public, not private, and only becomes visible to the audience once answers have been provided (meaning that inappropriate questions can simply be dismissed by our moderators).
2. Voting in multiple-choice polls (this requires participants to be joined via the Zoom app and not the browser)
3. At-home activities using simple materials. Either children can follow along during the session (you will be told in advance what materials to have ready) or our presenter will demonstrate an activity and then direct you to the instructions on our website.
4. During private sessions, participants can interact with our presenter using audio and video.

What is the difference between the 3 hour and the 1-hour programs? They look the same…

On most days, the 3-hour programs are an extended version of the 1-hour program. We don’t suggest booking your child(ren) into a 3 hour and 1-hour program on the same day.

The format of the 3-hour programs is:

• A 45-minute science show (during which children can ask questions via text-based Q&A)
• A 15-minute break
• A 45-minute session where our presenters demonstrate hands-on activities and children follow along at home
• A 15-minute break
• Another 45-minute hands-on session
• 15 minutes of Q&A

I have more than one child at home, how many tickets do I need to buy?

You only need to buy one ticket per device. You are welcome to have more than old child using the same device, but we recommend a maximum of three. This is because they will have to share the device to ask questions, and also share space in front of it to do their hands-on experiments.

Can I invite kids who are too young or too old?

You can, although:

• For younger children, their level of literacy and ability to type will limit their interactivity. You can help this by sitting with them and helping to type questions or “translate” content. This will also help when they are performing the experiments as well.
• For older children, they may not find the sessions engaging if they already know the subject matter at a higher level.

I have a high school child, can you do something for them?
