Description
This Prism by Discover Science is part of a range of science toys, kits & teaching aids for teaching about light & colour for schools and in the home. Use this toy for engaging science at home or in the classroom!
Teaching ideas for a Prism
- Have the kids measure the width and order of each light colour produced by the prism.
- Create a light ray diagram for how a prism works.
- Compare the rainbows created by the prism with those made by Fireworks glasses
- List the order of colours of a rainbow. Why is the order of colours in a rainbow always the same?
- Which light wavelength has the most amount of energy?
- Create a science project about the experiments Sir Isaac Newton did on light.
- Measure the angle that light needs to enter the prism to produce a rainbow.
- Mix colours of light and place your hand in front of the lights … it creates coloured shadows!
- Make a school mural of light entering and leaving a prism.
- What is the difference between refraction and reflection?
- Learn about redshift vs. blue shift. What has this got to theories of the Universe?
- Learn how colourimetry is used in science.
- Did you know that different metal salts will burn with different colours? Read more about flame chromatography!
- Colour absorption is different for every material and influences which colours that you see.

I just wanted to pass on how much the staff and students really enjoyed it and how perfect it was to launch our science week activities. The students were enthralled, educated and entertained – a perfect trifecta!
-Caulfield Grammar School – Big Science Big FunThanks so much for presenting at our school on Monday. Our students enjoyed the show.
-Greenvale Primary School – Big Science Big FunFizzics Education curated a thoughtful and hands-on experience for the children, incorporating practical, skill-based learning activities and followed by a science presentation at the end of the event involving liquid nitrogen. This was delivered safely and effectively, capturing both the children and the parents for the duration of the presentation.
-Macquarie Bank – Family Fun DayFizzics Education ran a show today at our school and it was wonderful. He was a great facilitator and the show was age appropriate and well done.
