The Australian Pelican is a common seabird found in Australian coastal regions. Adult pelicans can grow up to 1.6 metres high and have a wingspan over 2 metres wide. The latin name for the Australian pelican is Pelecanus conspicillatus.
Teaching ideas for a pelican replica
- Students can research water birds, detailing their life cycles and ecology.
- Students could create a poster or project that describes pelicans in detail.
- Read ‘Storm Boy’, an Australian story about a boy and his pelican
- Make a diorama using the pelican replica in an estuarine area.
- Read about the ecology of pelicans. What do they eat? Where are they found?
- How do large birds glide without flapping their wings?
- What is the volume of a pelican’s beak?
- List all the birds that you can think of that hunt for fish.
I just wanted to pass on how much the staff and students really enjoyed it and how perfect it was to launch our science week activities. The students were enthralled, educated and entertained – a perfect trifecta!

This was delivered safely and effectively, capturing both the children and the parents for the duration of the presentation.
