Teaching ideas for a platypus replica
- Have students investigate what a monotreme is. This makes for a perfect opportunity for a student report or poster.
- Discuss how the platypus bill has electroreceptors for detecting prey in the creek bed. You could model this using a Lego robot, data logger or similar sensor on a pretend creek in your classroom.
- Make a diorama of a platypus replica in its natural habitat
- Read more about the ecology of a platypus. What does it eat? What are it’s natural predators?
- Create a map of the distribution of the platypus in the wild.
- Did you know that when the first stuffed platypus was brought back to England that people thought that it was a hoax?
