When Dutch explorers in the 17th century first saw these cute little creatures on Rottnest Island they described them as large rats. This led the Dutch to call the Island “Rotte-nest”, which means “rat nest”! You can find Rottnest Island just off the coast from Perth, Western Australia.
Teaching ideas for a quokka replica
- Use the quokka replica to create a diorama of these marsupials in the bush
- Map the distribution of quokkas.
- Learn about the ecology of a quokka. What do they eat? What are their predators?
- How are quokkas related to kangaroos and wallabies?
- How big is a quokka?
